1. STOP CLEANING BEFORE COMPANY COMES.
First of all, your friends probably don’t care how clean your place is. They’ve come to visit you.
Since you want your friends to enjoy being with you, having a super clean home may have the opposite effect.
If your place is immaculate they may start to feel bad because they are comparing yours to theirs. You want your friends to feel good, and this is a great place to start.
Keeping your place super clean isn’t good for your kids health either. They could develop more allergies as a result.
Your friends are coming to visit you because they like you, not to judge you.
If you are still worried about what they’ll think of you, place your vacuum cleaner in a prominent place.
They’ll think you got interrupted while cleaning.
2. STOP CARING WHAT OTHERS THINK OF YOU.
If you care about what others think, you’ll never get to enjoy the exhilaration of skinny dipping.
You’ll never feel comfortable making a presentation at work.
When you care too much about what others think, you’ll never enjoy being outside, head up high, wearing a yellow hat and orange sunglasses!
The more you worry about what people think of you, the less fun you can have.
3. STOP WORRYING.
Yep. Stop worrying.
Worrying never helps.
Worrying never feels good.
Think about what worrying really is; worry is simply a thought about something that hasn’t happened.
Wouldn’t it feel better to imagine the best that can happen?

If you could stop yourself from worrying about one thing today, what would that be?

Tha adage that when company comes is when stuff get fixed or done around the house came to mind as I first started reading your post. It’s true that I go into a frenzy to make things perfect for my house guests… LOL.
As far as worry, I am working on that. Sometimes I succeed and sometimes I don’t.
One of my college roommates had a great philosophy. She believed that her house would be way dirtier AFTER any party, so why bother to clean BEFORE the party?
If someone stops in, I’ll at least clean the surface of my desk that gets full of mail and paperwork. I stuff it into a box and put it on top of the dryer. Takes 3 seconds lol!
Do you use the “I like the idea that” concept in my book to help you reduce worry?
I do. My husband is a expert worrier so in his a toon he gets me started… LOL. Now I usual just listen and try not to participate. 🙂
I would stop worrying about the racoon getting the chickens! <3
Sensible, logical advice Wendy – delivered with some delightful humor! I have always lived by the principle that my friends come to be with me, and therefore wouldn’t win any Houseproud Diva of the Year awards! But guess what? I have lots of friends and they love to come and spend time with me. The only thing is that I consult with my clients from home, so my office does need to keep up appearances 🙂 As for worry – as you say – a monumental waste of time and energy that only attracts problems and ultimately makes us ill…..
It is true that worry can ultimately make us ill. I hope that more people who worry choose to search the net to find drug-free ways to stop their anxieties. EFT, the Emotional Freedom Technique, is my go-to tool to stop myself from worry.
This is just too precious! I spent a lot of time worrying about things that I can’t control. Then one day threw up my hands and said what the heck. Much happier now. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve definitely learned a lot from being a certified hypnotist!
I clean my house when I’m leaving for a trip!!! I’m sure my mom did the same. It’s like good luck/insurance that you’ll come back, right? Or….if you don’t…..the officials and rellies will find a clean home!

How funny – I do the same thing too. Mostly I clean the house because it feels so good to come home to a nice looking place!
My friend’s grandmother used to tell her what other people thought of her was none of her business. I try to remember that. I am not usually not concerned what I think others are thinking of me. Usually, it turns out they aren’t thinking anything about me.
Dawn, you are so right. Most people are thinking about themselves, not us. I’ve noticed that the people who see me to help them get over their fear of speaking are worried about what others think of them.
When they get over their fear of speaking, they learn that their audience is listening to learn, not to judge the speaker.
You are wise to remember your friend’s grandmother’s words.
Not sure if the sentence above is grammatically correct, but hey, I’m not concerned about what people think of me lol!
I want to stop worrying about my career and just let it happen.
Hi Lisa,
We use EFT tapping, aka the Emotional Freedom Technique to help stop worrying. There are some great introductory pages on our page, The Center of Success. http://www.thecenterofsuccess.com/what-we-offer/list-of-services/eftmeridian-tapping-sessions/#
You must gave come to my house lol! I actually laugh because I kid the girls all the time that we should invite friends over more frequently to make sure that the house gets clean! With 3 girls, one who is only 6, an immaculate house is just not realistic… but I am a visual person and I like my place to look inviting and relaxing. Worry? I used to worry about the house… now that I don’t, life is much happier. If I feel a little worry creep in, I think about how grateful I am to have a house full of love and laughter and “poof” worry goes out the window 🙂
Valerie, you are such a great example for your daughters. Learning that love and laughter is way more important than an immaculate house is priceless!
In my semi-retirement years, I have begun a ‘stop doing’ list. One is as simple as using a weedeater to trim the yard. It is a great source of frustration when it doesn’t crank and run, when the string won’t feed out easily, etc. Have cut back on being concerned about what others’ think. If you come to my house, you find it as we live in it & I expect the same with others. I used to think I didn’t worry, but recently discovered I thinly disguised it by ‘rehearsing.’ That is to say, rehearsing how things were going to play out in the future. Finally, I recognized it as a form of worrying. I’m still working on this one. Stop doing lists feel very useful at this time in my life. Like wine and food, it may pair up nicely with a companion start doing list!
Bill, a ‘Stop Doing List’ is a brilliant idea. I know way too many people who have so much on their plate that they stress themselves daily.
I definitely like that idea. Thanks for sharing!
Hey, company just makes your house dirtier so you may as well wait to clean when they leave anyway?!
