She hates her job and has been doing everything to try to find what she is passionate about.
She knows that deep inside of her she’s not fulfilled. But she doesn’t know what to do next.
For the past year she’s been trying to get herself unstuck so that she can take her next step and live her fulfilled passionate life.
While she described everything she’s tried to do I watched her face scrunch in frustration. It was clear to me that she’s been asking herself the wrong questions, over and over.
She told me she wakes in the morning and asks the universe “What am I supposed to be doing?” and “What is my passion?”
And then she waits for the answer.
Next morning she gets up and asks the universe again, “What am I supposed to be doing?” and “What is my passion?”
She is frustrated because she is getting nowhere. This has been going on for almost a year.
Truth is, she is getting somewhere. She realized that frustration simply means that what she is doing isn’t working and that she needs to do something else. She called me because a friend told her that I coach her to feel good about her life by changing her thoughts.
I listened to her story and looked her squarely in her eyes and told her the truth; “There is nothing wrong with you. It’s just that no one has ever taught you how to ask yourself the right questions so you can move forward.”
Relief flooded into her face and she relaxed.
I told her the only answers she can get ever get from those questions right now are “I don’t know.”
“Let me give you a new question. A question that will keep the door open for your mind to reveal to you what you enjoy and what the next step is for you.”
“I wonder what I can do NEXT that I might enjoy?”
That question is amazingly powerful because it allows her inner mind to wander and come up with different things she might enjoy.
That question allows her to take baby steps too. Rather than having to figure out her life’s passion she can think about just the next step.
Thinking about the next step is SO much easier than thinking about the rest of her life.
Even better, when we think of the things we enjoy doing, we activate good feelings inside.
Activating good feelings change how we feel about ourselves in the moment.
When we feel better, we get to enjoy the journey too.
Instead of feeling frustrated because she doesn’t have an answer, now she can now direct her mind to take a look at things she enjoys doing and take a baby step towards her own personal happiness.
What new things can you say to yourself that will help you on your journey?
