When I started out, I had to project confidence so my clients would meet their goals. That was easy compared to being confident about growing my business. I had to learn some new software, write more frequently, give more talks, and put videos on youtube.
Every day I pushed myself. I felt frustrated and exhausted. I began to learn from some great mentors and found there are easier ways to do what I needed to do – without fear of failure.
Sure wish they taught this stuff in school!
When you do what confident people do, you’ll have more fun while you are getting better at what you do.
1. Confident People Make Mistakes
People who are anxious and lack confidence are worried about making mistakes. They worry about others making fun of them, too. Confident people are those who decide that making a mistake doesn’t mean they’ve failed. If something happens, you can choose to turn that “mistake” into a learning experience. Learning and growing is something to be proud of and feels oh, so much better.
2. Confident People Ignore Their Inner Critic
Your inner critic is worried that things won’t work out and you’ll feel awful. That incessant critic will say anything to make sure that you don’t start something new because it’s afraid of failing.
“You can’t because you are too old. Too tall. Not smart enough. You don’t know how. You don’t have the resources. You’ll fail. You’ll never finish.” Aaargh!!!
Thank your inner critic for trying to protect you, then remind yourself that if others can do it, you can too.
3. Confident People Change What They Say To Themselves
Once I adopted the motto, “There Is No Failure, Only Feedback”, I felt so much better. I allowed myself to experiment, without fear of failure. It was as if I finally gave myself permission to be human and stopped punishing myself for not being perfect.
Notice the times when things don’t work out the way you expect and be nicer to yourself. If you wouldn’t say it to a friend, don’t say it to yourself! Choose to learn from your experience.
