Have you ever noticed that some people seem to avoid positive thinking? They are so much into their stories, that they don’t even realize that they are thinking negatively.
A close friend of mine always expects the worse. She is the queen of negative thinking. Her life is always crazy, and she expects the worse will happen.
She doesn’t think she’s a negative thinker. She describes herself as a “realist”.
She doesn’t want to change because positive thinking is “for people who have their heads in the clouds”. According to her, people who practice positive thinking are avoiding reality.
“Don’t get a pedicure! she told me last week. “People always get infections when they get pedicures.”
“Don’t eat outside because you’ll attract bees and get stung. Anyway, it won’t matter because you’ll probably get sick from eating food that has been in the sun for 10 minutes.”
Yikes.
Truth be told, it’s hard for me to spend time with her. After a one hour lunch I feel like I have to shake off the negative energy.
She knows that I’m into positive thinking. She knows that I used to unhappy and negative. She knows that I help people with their thoughts so that they can be more positive and enjoy life more.
I know she’s on her own path. She doesn’t need to change. In her own way she’s happy where she is.
I won’t try to change her or sell her the benefits of positive thinking.
Being a realist is her personal safety net and for whatever reason, it’s important for her. As her friend I accept where she is.
